6 Days Rwanda Safari – Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Rwanda – Kigali International Airport
Arrive in Rwanda through its main gateway where you will find the guide waiting for you.
Accommodation: You will be transferred to your respective hotel.
Day 2: Visit Gisozi Memorial Site (optional); Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, you can undertake a tour around Kigali city to see the national museum and genocide memorial site among other attractions.
After this morning encounter, embark on the drive to Volcanoes National Park amidst the amazing scenery en route.
It is a 116 km journey taking over 3 hours. Arrive in the evening and spend some time at Iby’wachu village to enjoy the Banyarwanda cultural performances.
Day 3: Encounter Gorillas
After an early breakfast, you will assemble at the park headquarters at Kinigi to have a close to one-hour briefing from preferably the park warden or his representative about the gorilla trekking activity that you are trying to undertake.
The briefing commences at 08:00 am and the gorilla families to track will also be allocated during this session after which you will embark on the search for Mountain gorillas in the lush Volcanoes National Park, an activity that can take 2 – 8 hours.
You have one hour to interact with gorillas, take photos, and ask any relevant questions from the tour guide before returning to the lodge for relaxation.
You can opt for a cultural walk to the adjacent Banyarwanda village or a nature walk to encounter the caves and the lakes.
Accommodation: Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Visit Dian Fossey Grave; Drive to Kivu Lake
After breakfast, hike the Dian Fossey grave at the Karisoke research center to pay tribute to one of the most well-known conservationists who have ever lived on this planet.
The grave of her admirable silverback – Digit also lies in close proximity and thus can be encountered on this gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda. This activity involves a relative climb and lasts 3 -4 hours.
Return to the lodge for lunch after which you will embark on the transfer to Lake Kivu 110 km taking about a 2-hour drive amidst the great scenic views en route.
Day 5: Drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After your morning cozy breakfast amidst the thrilling fresh air from the Lake, embark on your journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park 220km taking approximately 6 – 7 hours’ drive. You will have lunch en route and arrive in Nyungwe in the afternoon.
Day 6: Undertake Chimp Trekking Experience
Wake up early for an early morning cup of coffee before embarking on the Chimpanzee trekking experience in the prehistoric forest of Nyungwe.
It is quite amazing to encounter Chimps rolling themselves across these well-structured trees as they gather and consume as many fruits as they can.
Take photos and generate enough memories to keep with you forever. Return to the lodge and then embark on a return journey 268 km approximately 6 hours’ drive to Kigali city. You will arrive in the late evening.
